Jinnsa Sukke (Silver fish dry dish)

Jinnsa is the name by which this delicate tiny silver fish (in english)  is known in konkani language. The other names are Modka or Yerlya , these are the names by which the fisherwomen in mumbai call this fish. This is a very tiny fish which is clean and tasty. This fish can be either fried or made into dry or gravy dishes which are equally tasty. We usually cook all the fish varieties in coconut oil , this gives a unique flavour to the dishes but you can change the oil as per your choice.

Ingredients :

1 bowl ................. Jinnsa (Silver fish)
1 cup...................finely chopped onions
2 to 3  .......................green chillies
1 1/2 tsp....................turmeric powder
 1 tsp .....................Karwari sambar masala
                             ( or dhana jeera powder)
2 to 3................... dry kokam
1 to 2 tbsp ...............grated fresh coconut
1 tbsp....................chopped coriander
coconut oil to cook
Salt as needed

Method :

Heat oil and saute onions till transparent.
Add the cut chillies and washed and cleaned fish.
Add turmeric, sambar masala , salt and kokam.
Mix every thing properly just once and let it cook for 5 to 10 minutes.
As this fish is very delicate don't overcook and don't turn it again and again.
In the end garnish with coconut and coriander.

  1. Delicious! I never tried silver fish but looking at the picture, this fish looks similar to smelt. I usually grill it on the pan and sometimes just like you, saute onions and then fry the fish in it. Thanks for sharing the recipe and linking it my seafood feast event.
